Another day full of places that I wish we had the time to spend a week in! Started up the highway from Big River this morning. We stopped at Poplar Point Resort, they had a huge wind storm through here a while back so the trees aren’t as beautiful as they used to be but the resort is booming. There is seasonal camping here but as he adds new stalls there may be sites available on a per night basis. In the meantime, he does rent cabins for those travelling by car, along with boat rentals for the fishermen.
The highway here follows up the side of Cowan Lake. At the north end of the lake, you can see the small dam that creates the lake. We saw cranes here and more pelicans.
After the Cowan Dam we ran into a section of the road where preparations for new pavement were being worked on. This seems to be one of the last “bad old” sections of the pavement along this part of the route so travellers will be pleased with the road later this summer.
Northern Village of Green Lake has created a new Lac Vert RV Park just south of the village. It has 57 pull through sites, 40 that are full service. They also have a boat launch area. There is a cute coffee shop/café when you first get to town.
Meadow Lake is next along the highway. It is a little bigger community again so has all the services that come with that. Meadow Lake Provincial Park is just to the north of the official highway and has beautiful smaller lakes that are great for fishing, kayaking, etc. as well as larger lakes for the bigger boats. There are many campgounds and resorts through the park and some do offer full service sites and some are the more rustic kind. The roads through here are gravel but if you take it slow (which is what they want) you will find that the journey off the pavement is worth it.
This evening we arrived in Cold Lake, another beautiful larger community with all the amenities. Cold Lake has a large marina area, a beautiful beach and also many campgrounds in the area. Check out their page in the NWW guide here on the website or pick up a copy from the many travel info centres where they are available for distribution.
