Took a few days off the journey to attend to business. So next we journey through north central Alberta from Athabasca to Slave Lake and beyond.
This adventure starts with agricultural land adjacent to the highway but quickly takes you into the forest with lots of recreational campsites along the road at small pocket lakes.
Highway 55 connects with Hwy 2 southeast of Slave Lake driving through an area recovering from a forest fire. A reminder to make sure that campfires are extinguished and not to through cigarettes out the window of a vehicle.
Slave Lake is Alberta’s largest vehicle accessible lake. Over 100 km long (62 miles) and 15 km wide at it’s widest. The town of Slave Lake is located on the southeast shores, the beautiful Gilwood Golf Course is north of town. There is a provincial park and campground on the east end of the lake with a great little campground and beach right in town.
